How to Read a USDC Transaction on Basescan, Field by Field

Every transfer on Base leaves a public record. A block explorer, Basescan for Base, lets anyone read it. You do not need an account, and it is the quickest way to prove that a payment happened. This guide goes through a typical USDC transfer page, field by field, including the one thing that confuses almost everyone: the To address.

Where to start

Paste a transaction hash (the long string that starts with 0x) into the search bar of Basescan and press enter. You can also open a wallet address page to see all of its activity. For example, the address that receives tips on this site is on a public page you can look at any time: basescan.org/address/0x13dd72Fa0E7504790585D92bD98c720f6fD2aBa6.

The fields that matter

FieldWhat it tells you
Transaction HashThe unique id of this transaction. Keep it as your receipt.
StatusSuccess if it executed, Fail if it reverted, Pending if it is not in a block yet.
Block and TimestampWhich block included it and when.
FromThe wallet that signed and sent the transaction.
To (Interacted With)The contract that was called. For a USDC transfer this is the USDC contract, not the recipient.
ERC-20 Tokens TransferredThe part you came for: the sender, the recipient, the amount and the token.
Transaction FeeWhat the sender paid the network, in ETH.
Gas PriceThe price per unit of work. You can ignore it as a beginner.

The To address is not the recipient

A USDC transfer is a call to the USDC contract that says "move this amount from the sender to this other address". That is why the transaction's To field shows the contract, which on Base is 0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913. Look lower on the page, in the section ERC-20 Tokens Transferred. That section shows the three things you want: From (who paid), To (who received) and For (how much, with the token name and symbol).

Two checks protect you here. First, confirm that the token is USDC and that the contract address is the one above, because lookalike tokens exist. Second, confirm that the To inside the token section is the address you meant to pay.

Amounts and decimals

USDC counts in six decimals. On the transaction's input data you may see a raw number such as 1000000, which means 1 USDC, and 10000 means 0.01 USDC. The explorer already converts it for you in the token section. Pay-per-call APIs use the same raw units in their payment requests, so a price of 1000 is a tenth of a cent.

Status and fee

  • Success means the transaction ran. For a payment, that is the line you want to see.
  • Fail means it was included in a block but reverted. No tokens moved, but the network fee was still charged.
  • Pending means it has not been included yet. On Base this usually lasts only a few seconds.

The fee is shown in ETH because Base charges fees in ETH, not in USDC. For a normal transfer it is a tiny fraction of a cent. If you want the number in dollars, Basescan shows it in parentheses next to the ETH amount.

Using it to verify a payment

If someone says they paid you, ask for the transaction hash, open it and check four things in order: the status is Success, the token is the real USDC contract, the To in the token section is your address, and the amount is right. Do not rely on a screenshot, because screenshots can be faked and the explorer cannot.

Staying safe

An explorer is read-only. It never needs your seed phrase, never asks you to approve anything and never asks you to connect a wallet just to look at a transaction. Type basescan.org yourself or use a bookmark instead of clicking a link from a message, because fake explorer sites exist. If you have not yet sent a transfer of your own, start with How to Send USDC on Base and then come back to read it.

FAQ

Why is the To address on my transaction the USDC contract and not the person I paid?

A token transfer is a call to the token's contract. The To field shows that contract. The real sender, recipient and amount are in the section called ERC-20 Tokens Transferred.

What does Success mean on Basescan?

The transaction was included in a block and executed without error. A status of Fail means it was included but reverted, and no tokens moved, though you still paid the network fee.

Why does the fee show in ETH if I paid in USDC?

On Base the network fee is paid in ETH, separately from the USDC you send. The amount is usually a tiny fraction of a cent.

Does a block explorer ever ask for my keys?

Never. A block explorer is read-only. If a site that looks like an explorer asks you to connect a wallet to see a transaction or to enter a seed phrase, close it.

Every EVM chain works. USDC on Base is recommended: fees are a fraction of a cent. No account needed — it goes straight to the creator's wallet.
