USDC is a digital dollar: one USDC is meant to be worth one US dollar. Base is a low-fee network built on top of Ethereum, so sending USDC there costs a fraction of a cent or a few cents instead of dollars. This guide walks through one transfer, from one wallet to another, and the checks that prevent the classic mistakes. It takes about five minutes.

What you need before you start

  • A wallet that supports Base. Most Ethereum-compatible wallets do. Some show Base by default, others make you pick it from a list of networks.
  • USDC on Base in that wallet. USDC on another network, such as Ethereum, is a different balance and will not work for this transfer.
  • A little ETH on Base for the network fee, which on Base is paid in ETH. A few cents' worth is enough for many transfers. A few wallets sponsor the fee, and then you do not need any.
  • The recipient's address. It is 42 characters long and starts with 0x.

The steps

  1. Open your wallet and select the Base network. The network name is usually shown at the top of the screen or in the token list.
  2. Choose USDC. The official USDC contract on Base is 0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913. If your wallet lets you view the token details, compare them. Fake tokens that copy the name and logo exist, so a token you did not add yourself deserves suspicion.
  3. Tap Send and enter the recipient's address. Copy it from the recipient's official page or scan their QR code. Do not type it by hand and do not take it from a message you cannot verify.
  4. Check the address. Compare the first six and the last six characters with the original. Scammers create addresses that look alike at a glance.
  5. Enter the amount. For a first transfer to a new address, send a small test of about 1 USDC.
  6. Review the network fee and confirm. On Base the fee is usually a fraction of a cent, and a few cents when the network is busy.
  7. Copy the transaction hash. After you confirm, the wallet gives you a long string that starts with 0x. Open it on basescan.org and look for the status Success. How to read that page is explained in How to Read a USDC Transaction on Basescan.
  8. Send the real amount once the test has arrived.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Wrong network. USDC exists on several networks. If the recipient expects Ethereum and you send on Base (or the other way around), the money may not show up where they look. Always ask which network, and for exchange deposits use exactly the network the deposit page names.
  • Wrong address. Transfers cannot be undone. This is why the test amount is worth the extra minute.
  • Trusting the address history. Do not copy a recipient's address from your own past transactions. Attackers send tiny transfers from look-alike addresses so that they appear in your history, hoping you will copy the wrong one.
  • Being rushed. A message that says you must send funds immediately is a scam, not an emergency. More on that in How to Spot Common Crypto Scams.

A small thing to try it on

If you want to practice with a small amount, the tip jar on this site accepts USDC on Base. You will find the address and a QR code under Support the studio. Send a dollar if you like it, and use the transaction hash to follow your own payment on the explorer.

A note on payments with no fee for the payer

Some apps let you pay without holding any ETH. The x402 protocol, used by pay-per-call APIs, works that way: you sign an authorization and the service submits the transfer and covers the fee. That is a feature of those apps. For a normal wallet-to-wallet transfer, keep a little ETH on Base.

FAQ

Do I need ETH to send USDC on Base?

Usually yes. On Base the network fee is paid in ETH, not in USDC, and a few cents' worth of ETH covers many transfers. Some wallets sponsor the fee for you; if yours shows the fee as sponsored, you do not need any.

How long does a USDC transfer on Base take?

Usually a few seconds. Base produces a block about every two seconds, so a transfer normally shows as successful on a block explorer almost immediately.

Can I cancel or reverse a transfer?

No. Blockchain transfers are final. If you send to a wrong address or to the wrong network, only the owner of that address can send the money back.

What is a safe first amount?

Send a small test, such as 1 USDC, to a new address first. When it arrives, send the real amount. The test costs a fraction of a cent in fees.

Every EVM chain works. USDC on Base is recommended: fees are a fraction of a cent. No account needed — it goes straight to the creator's wallet.
